How points add up
Points are counted by the date of the violation. If you get 11 or more points within 24 months, the DMV may suspend your driver license. Before February 16, 2026, the window was 18 months. Separately, 6 or more points within 18 months triggers a Driver Responsibility Assessment fee paid to the DMV.
Completing a DMV-approved Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) course can subtract up to 4 points when the DMV calculates a suspension.
