Vehicle and Traffic Law Violations (VTL)
306 – No Inspection. This ticket is issued when vehicle’s inspection ticket is either missing, expired, altered. This ticket is also issued when car registration is suspended making the existing inspection sticker a nullity.
319 – Operating without Insurance. Very serious charge with additional consequences if vehicle did not have a valid insurance when motorist was pulled over. This ticket will also be issued when insurance lapse causes suspension of registration.
355 – Operating/permitting operation while license/registration is suspended/revoked. This is a criminal charge. It is unclassified Misdemeanor. Issued when vehicle registration is suspended. It is similar to VTL 512, driving with suspended/revoked registration. Pleading guilty to that will result in a criminal record.
370 – Failure to notify insurer of accident for hire vehicle. This is a criminal offense. Unclassified Misdemeanor. Pleading guilty to that will cause to sustain a criminal record.
375-385 These tickets issued for various car equipment violations. Examples are broken
light, no back up mirror, no deadlights, unauthorized lights, etc.
401-403 These tickets issued for a lack of or improper registration of a motor vehicle.
Violation 401.1 will also be issued when vehicle registration is suspended since such suspension makes otherwise valid and current registration sticker a nullity.
509 – Driving without a license, driving out of class. You get this ticket when you drive without a driver license. This has no points. Once such ticket is received and you actually had your license at home. Most courts will dismiss this ticket upon seeing a driver license. This charge is different from 511.1, driving with suspended license (which is a crime). Driver who is charged with driving with suspended license, will also get his charge as well since once driver license is suspended, the possession of actual driver license is a nullity since DMV prohibits driver to use it until certain requirements are met, usually clearance of suspension.
511 – Aggravated unlicensed operation (aka Driving with suspended license).
It is a crime, unclassified misdemeanor – 511.1. However, VTL 511.3 is a felony. The difference is the number of suspensions. If this charge is issued it will require driver’s personal appearance in court (unlike most of the traffic tickets) when driver has outstanding suspensions but still operates a car, and gets pulled over. See detailed discussion of this charge in our “Suspension” section.
512 – Driving with suspended or revoked registration. This is a crime, unclassified Misdemeanor. The most common cause for this charge is a lapse of insurance at some point in the past. Although, insurance issues may have been fixed when such VTL 512 charge is issued, most drivers who found themselves in such situation failed to go to DMV to pay penalty for having such lapse that causes registration to be suspended. See detailed discussion of this charge in our “Suspension” section
600 – Leaving the scene of an accident with property damage (VTL 600.1) & personal injury
VTL 600.2. While VTL 600.1 is an infraction, VTL 600.2, is a crime. Conviction of any most like will cause an increase in insurance premiums. Tis is also known as Hit-and-Run charge. For more details on this charge please read our blog article about this.
